Goff & Genders Advance at NCAAs on High Bar

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Nathan Goff and junior Leo Genders of the Army gymnastics team advanced to the individual finals of high bar at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships after finishing sixth and eighth in the first pre-qualifying session Friday afternoon at St. John Arena on the campus of Ohio State.

"The guys fought hard today," said head coach Doug Van Everen. "I couldn't ask for more. Everyone on the team performed well."

Goff posted a score of 14.6, just shy of his career mark (14.8) and Genders turned in a 14. 4 tying for sixth and eighth place, respectively, on the high bar.

The top three individuals in each event who are not already on a qualifying team or eligible for the all-around competition advance from each pre-qualifying session to the finals session on Saturday. The top eight scores from Saturday's final will earn All-America honors.

Nissen-Emery Award winner Jesse Glenn and freshman Cole Casanova came up shy of advance as all-arounders posting scores of 81.95 and 81.60, respectively.

Glenn tied for 11th on high bar (14.3), was 14th on floor exercise (14.4), 16th on parallel bars (14.2) and 19th on vault. He also turned in a 13.55 on still rings and an 11.05 on pommel horse.

Genders and Seth Cannon tied for 23rd on floor exercise with scores of 13.85. Casanova followed with a mark of 13.10. Casanova was the Black Knights' top finisher on the pommel horse with a score of 13.45.

Casanova was 21st on vault (14.4) and high bar (13.55), t-23rd on the still rings (13.70) and tied for 25th on parallel bars (13.4).

Elliott Herman posted a 13.25 on the still rings for Army, while Joe Pritts (14.2) and Ryan Wilson (13.7) competed on the vault. Goff was also a competitor on the parallel bars where he posted a score of 13.4 to tie for 25th.

Army will be looking for its first All-America honors since 2005 in tomorrow's finals round. The last session begins at 1 p.m. Saturday.
