Men’s Rugby Set for Varsity Cup Quarterfinals

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 11 Army West Point men's rugby team enters the quarterfinals of the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup as the second-ranked Golden Bears of Cal come to Anderson Rugby Complex on Saturday for a 3 p.m. kickoff.

Army is riding a three-game winning streak that started with an upset over then-No. 5 Utah on the road. After trailing 21-12 at halftime, the Black Knights scored three times while their tight defensive structure allowed the Utes into the try zone once in the second half for a 29-26 victory. The following week, Jake Lachina's program-record four tries lifted Army over Navy on the road, 27-22.
In the opening round of the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup, Army earned its first victory in the tournament, downing the 20th-ranked Sooners of Oklahoma, 55-10. In the match, senior Andrew Borer scored a record-setting 30 points on three tries, conversions and penalty kicks.
Cal is looking to continue its success from the regular season as they boast a record of 16-2, including a perfect 5-0 mark in PAC Rugby for its fourth-consecutive conference title. The 25-time national champions defeated Texas in the first round, 138-0.
