ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – With the first 18-holes of the NCAA Golf Regional complete, Army ranks 11th with a 15-over score. The Black Knights have been paced by Peter Kim who finished the day in the tied for fifth spot with a one-under score.
Â
"The team got off to a great start today and led at the turn," said head coach Brian Watts. "We were well prepared for the setup, but we had a rough stretch coming in. We had a good practice session after the round and we will be ready to go out and compete tomorrow. The weather is going to be a challenge, but these young men have shown resilience all year long and tough conditions."
Â
Kim leads the team with 71 strokes after the first completed round. The junior recorded five birdies at the Champion Golf Course with three of those coming off the back nine. Kim and the rest of the Black Knights began the round at the 10th hole and through the first nine he shot three-under. In the five par-five chances on the course, Kim has tallied four birdies and one even par.
Â
"Peter has a great round going and although he had a few bogeys coming in, he finished up with a great birdie on his last hole to get back to one-under," said Watts.
Â
Marcus Plunkett and Eric Peng are both tied for 53rd with 77 strokes apiece. Plunkett is one of 11 golfers to sink an eagle, while Peng carded two birdies. Justin Pagila and Dean Sakata closed-out today's round with 78 strokes each to rank them tied for 60th. Pagila notched three birdies on the day for the second-most on the team.
Â
Overall, the Cadets combined for a 15-over score of 303 which places them 11th. Arizona State leads the field with a two-under score and is followed by South Florida (-1), Texas Tech (+3), Southern California (+3) and TCU (+5).
Â
The top individual golfers of the day were R. Fernandes of South Florida and J. Rahm of Arizona State who both went three-under.
Â
"We're looking forward to getting back out there to post better scores tomorrow," added Watts. "There is a lot of golf left, so we have to take it one shot at a time."
