JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sophomore Lee Bares and junior Trevor Touchton were the first competitors for the Army West Point track and field teams at the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla., on Thursday. Both posted marks that rank in the top three individually for them lifetime.
"Lee Bares was jumping very well today," said Army Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "He has been a great competitor all year and today was no exception. We could not ask for much more from him. He was his best at the end."
Bares competed in the Pole Vault and reached 5.25 meters, his season-best and second-highest vault all-time, trailing only his school-record of 5.31 meters. It placed him 16th in the 48 man grouping and was nearly good enough for the top 12 and a trip to Oregon for the NCAA Championships. Bares cleared the bar in his third attempt however, and not his first attempt.
Touchton recorded his third-fastest time ever in the 800 Meter Run. The state of Florida native missed out on his personal-best by less than a second. He finished the race in 1:50.61, placing 37th out of 48 runners after being the last qualifier to make the field.
"Trevor got into the fastest heat the six heats tonight," said Smith. "He put himself in the hunt and just couldn't hold it. He was the last guy in the heat and finished much higher than he came in so we can't complain. He will be back here next year and he will be better."
The Black Knights do not have anybody competing on Friday but return to action with the 4x100 Meter Relay team, high jumper Jeff Giannettino, and women's shot putter Briyah Brown on Saturday.
