Bowlin, LaMonica Earn CEP Monthly Honors
April 05, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse, Athletics, Rabble Rousers
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Cows Bailey Bowlin and Jon LaMonica were rewarded for their hard work by the Center of Enhance Performance as the Corps Squad Athletes of the Month for March.
Bowlin is a member of the Rabble Rousers and is an International Relations major from Walton, Ky., and LaMonica is a long-stick midfielder for the men's lacrosse team and is a local New Yorker from Deer Park.
Cadet Bailey Bowlin has a 3.80 grade point average and she has made the Dean's list in each of her five semesters at West Point, and she is currently ranked 90th academically out of 1,046 cadets in her class. Importantly, she is showing an upward trajectory in her academic standing, earning a 4.055 GPA during her last term.
She is ranked 76th in her class overall in terms of Cumulative Quality Point Average, which is based on the three pillars of Academics, Physical and Military. In recognition of her demonstrated leadership abilities, the Brigade Tactical Department recently selected Cadet Bowlin to be the Cadet Basic Training Executive Offive for the 1st Detail, one of the highest Key Summer Leader positions available to cadets. Bailey leads by example on both the team and in her company and is always prepared for any situation thrown at her. Her warmth, incredible patience and natural lead-by-example attitude serves as inspiration to all the members on her team.
Bowlin is ranked 3rd in her class in Physical Development Pillar with a 3.930 physical program score cumulative (PPSC), and she has been a starting cheerleader her entire time at West Point. Bailey is point flyer in all cheerleading routines and performs the most elite stunts. Bowlin's strong work ethic, leadership, talent, and passion for cheerleading have proven to be invaluable.
Bowlin has earned a 3.457 military program score cumulative (MPSC) through five semesters of time at West Point. She is currently ranked 92nd in her class in the Military Development Pillar and is on track to hold one of the top ten cadet leadership positions at USMA.
LaMonica is a product of the Prep School, he epitomizes the character of a student-athlete. During his rocky first semester as a plebe, he failed two core courses, History and Information Technology, which resulted in a Term Quality point Average (TQPA) of 1.001. Not to be discouraged, he recognized his shortcomings and changed his academic study habits. LaMonica retook both courses that he failed, receiving an 'A' and a 'B', in IT and History, respectively. This success was the catalyst that he needed to gain confidence in himself and to unlock his true academic potential. This strength of character has led him to become a true "Phoenix Rising."Â
He has become the "go-to guy" for the men's lacrosse team as the resident IT expert, and routinely assists plebes on the team with additional instruction. LaMonica has spent much of his time attending the plebe's mandatory study hall sessions, during which he conducts group and one-on-one tutoring. After major assignments and exams, he follows-up with each cadet he has tutored. LaMonica checks on their performance by asking them their thoughts on the exam, and takes the time to address any issues they may have had. More importantly, LaMonica continues to work with each of his cadets throughout the semester and communicates his findings to the OR Staff.Â
This is not a "one and done" for him. He has dedicated his time to ensure that his peers succeed, while making sure his own academic, athletic, and company responsibilities are fully met. Currently earning a 2.808 Term GPA, he strives every day to capture a sought-after position on the Dean's List and has become a true academic success story.Â
"Jon is a true academic success story," head men's lacrosse coach Joe Alberici said. "After struggling mightily out of the gate he has turned around his academic performance in a way I have never seen in my twelve years as the head coach. Of equal importance Jon has been a positive force in our lacrosse tutoring program having selflessly mentored dozens of his teammates in IT over the past two years. Lastly John has impacted our team on the field in a big way helping to anchor a defense that is currently second in the nation in scoring defense."
LaMonica is energetic and eager to succeed. He strives to refine his personal beliefs every day and is a caring individual who puts others first, while still maintaining his responsibilities. LaMonica's "to-do" list always fills up rather quickly, allowing him to show that he is an adept multi-tasker. He has the common sense coupled with the leadership qualities the academy, the U.S. Army, and the nation look for in a Cadet graduating from this institution. Vince Lombardi once said, "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence." Cadet Jon LaMonica is indeed "catching excellence."Â
