Annapolis, Md. - The Army West Point women's cross country team fell to Navy in the 2018 Army-Navy Star Meet 31-24.
Freshman Shelby Piccinic was the team's top finisher, placing third with a time of 22:06.16. 2016 Star Meet race winner Bethany Nunnery finished fifth at 22:42.32 and 2017 Star Meet race winner Abby Halbrook was right behind her in sixth with a time of 22:45.31.
The split result in the men's and women's Star Meet keeps Army ahead 4-3 in the 2018-19 Star Series presented by USAA.
Coach's Corner: Head Coach Mike Smith -
"We were not good enough to win the meet today. That is not to say we ran poorly because that is not the case. There were moments in the race where we got up into it and it looked like we might pull it off, but we just weren't able to get the places we needed. Bethany (Nunnery), Sam (Coletti) and Mika (Andrews) did a nice job of charging up and by the end, we had five in front of Navy's fifth, but didn't have enough firepower up front to flip the score."
"Shelby Piccinic was great today. She is young and just starting to figure out how to run collegiate races. She has a bright future ahead of her and was a force for us today. She got right up with the leaders and didn't back down at all. Great fight from her today. Behind Shelby, I think we can run better than we did today and that was my message to our team. We have the talent and the depth to be much better. We just need to execute in the race when it matters and that has to come from more than the top five women. We will get this behind us and set our sights on preparing for the conference meet in two weeks."
