Defense Secures Win for Army
October 19, 2018 | Women's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army women's rugby team got back into the win column Saturday night at the Anderson Rugby Complex, as the Black Knights topped Notre Dame College 21-14.
Army (3-4) and NDC (2-4) grinded out a physical first half that saw tremendous defense from both sides. Mackenzie Borchers opened the game with one of her two penalty kicks in the game in the seventh minute. The Falcons quickly answered with a try to take their only lead of the game at 7-3.
Junior Sally Varner would put Army back ahead minutes later with the first of her two tries to make it 8-7 midway through the first half before the defenses waged war.
Varner and Kaitlyn Schwarting opened the second half to give the Black Knights an 18-7 cushion in the second half, and although NDC would cut the gap in the 66th minute with a try to make it 18-14, the Cadets fought to the finish to secure the victory.
