Army Places Third in President's Trophy Match
November 03, 2018 | Rifle
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Army West Point rifle team placed third at the All-Academy President's Match in Annapolis, Md. on Saturday.
The match was conducted between the four service academies: Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard.
"This is a bittersweet outcome," head coach Web Wright said. "On one hand, we shot the program high in the aggregate score and really shot a national level air rifle score. But, our smallbore scores continue to be a little below where our potential lies."
Army's air rifle score of 2361 is an all-time high for the program, topping their score of 2360 from the NCAA Qualification match in 2017.
"Clayton Hanson led smallbore for us with a 579. Kaitlyn Kutz and Lauren McMahan crushed it, both with 593 scores in airgun," Wright said. "And the unsung hero was Aaron Flowers, with personal records with both guns."
Army came into the match ranked 14th in the nation and competed with two highly ranked teams in #5 Air Force and #8 Navy.
"I think our score will move us up in the rankings," Wright said. "We will see what happens when they come out on Monday."
