Cadets Triumphant Over UConn in Road Battle

HARTFORD, Conn. – Thanks to 13 saves in the third period by Trevin Kozlowski, the Army West Point hockey team topped UConn 2-1 on the road Friday night.Â

The Black Knights are now 2-0 and have topped two non-conference opponents for the first time to start the season since 1989.Â

Army jumped ahead thanks to John Zimmerman's first career goal, but the Huskies answered right away to knot the score at 1-1.Â

With four minutes to go in the second period, Marshal Plunkett connected with Daniel Haider for the game-winner.Â

Kozlowski ended the game with 27 saves including 13 in the final period to maintain the Cadets' lead.Â

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ Â
- The first period was even with both teams recording five shots on goal and one penalty apiece.Â
- Things heated up in the second stanza however with goals from each side spacing 31 seconds apart.Â
- Army struck first when Dominic Franco won the faceoff at the left circle.  Zimmerman one-timed the puck to beat Tomas Vomacka stick side high. Â
- UConn came back to re-tie the game when Carter Berger fired from the point and Brian Rigali tipped it in the net for the score.Â
- With four minutes to go in the second, Plunkett carried the puck down the ice and setup Haider to backhand the puck in after a wraparound attempt.Â
- The Black Knights and Huskies continued to battle in the third period, but 13 saves by Kozlowski in the final frame kept Army on top, 2-1.Â
HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army is 2-0 to start the season with consecutive non-conference victories for the first time since 1989.
- The Black Knights took control of the series with the Huskies 31-30-8, and tied things up when playing in UConn territory at 13-13-2.Â
- Kozlowski recorded a season-high 27 saves on the night.Â
- It was the 13th time in the netminder's career to record 20 or more saves.Â
- After dishing out 18 career assists, Zimmerman notched the first goal of his career tonight.Â
- The junior defender scored Army's first goal of the night for his 19th career point.Â
- Haider's game winner was the first in his career.
- The sophomore registered six goals in two years and 11 points.Â
- Two Black Knights recorded assists for the second game in a row this season.Â
- Plunkett and Krueger were both credited with the helpers on the game-winning goal.Â
- Plunkett now boasts three assists this season and Krueger has two.Â
- Franco notched his first point of the year.Â
- The Assistant captain recorded the 40th in his career and his 75th point.
- The Huskies outshot the Cadets 28-27 tonight.
- Army denied UConn on four power play opportunities.Â
