Navy Edges Army in Men's Star Meet
October 18, 2019 | Men's Cross Country
WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Navy was able to prevent a Star Meet sweep on Friday as they defeated Army in the men's cross country meet 27-29.
Army's loss ends a two-year winning streak in the meet. The team was once again led by senior captain Ben Petrella, who finished third in the race with a time of 23:27.4. Petrella was followed by Robbie Santoyo in fourth, Marshall Beatty in sixth and Roman Ollar in seventh. In his first Star Meet, freshman Garrett Gough placed ninth.
The Midshipmen took the top two spots in the race, with seniors Jake Brophy and Kevin Murray placing first and second.
Army will now turn its attention to another meeting with Navy and the rest of the Patriot League at the Patriot League Championships on Nov. 2.
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"Obviously a pretty disappointing outcome today. We didn't run poorly, we just didn't run well enough to win. Ben and Robbie did a nice job of pushing at the front and did what they needed to do. Garrett ran really well. This meet is an extraordinary event from an emotional standpoint, so it is impressive to see a plebe compete so well. I really thought he did a nice job.
We were a little bit undisciplined out there in a few other places and it cost us. In a meet such as this, those small mistakes can have dire consequences. The margin between winning and losing is razor thin. It is a pretty hard lesson for the guys right now, but tomorrow they will have a choice to make. They can lie down and give up or they can channel their energy into a different outcome in the next challenge.
After the meet, I told them the same thing I always tell them, we are measured by these competitions, but we are not defined by them. You have to have a short memory in sports or you won't survive. We will learn a lot about these men in the coming weeks."
TOP FINISHERS:
3. Ben Petrella - 23:27.4
4. Robbie Santoyo - 23:33.1
6. Marshall Beatty - 23:39.1
7. Roman Ollar - 23:41.2
