WEST POINT, N.Y. - After an undefeated start to the 15s season during the fall, the Army West Point men's rugby team will be back in action this week beginning with a trip to Missouri to battle a high-powered Lindenwood team on Saturday.
"We were really happy with our offseason work," said head coach Matt Sherman. "We hit our targets in the weight room for improvement and strength, as well as our targets in the classroom and with the Core."
The current D1AÂ No. 4 nationally ranked Black Knights (9-0) captured the Rugby East title after their 31-0 victory over Penn State in October. That win also secured at least one home playoff game for the D1A Men's Collegiate National Championships.
Also highlighting the spring season is a trip to the United Kingdom for three matches. Army will face Oxford University, the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, and Swansea University.
"First and foremost, it's going to be a life experience that everyone is going to remember and learn from," added Sherman. "On the military side, we get to have some experiences with our brothers in arms at Sandhurst Academy, both on and off the field. It will be three very hard games [over there], which will be fantastic, and we'll get to witness some of the best rugby in the world when Ireland plays Wales.
When the Black Knights return to West Point, the Cadets will face rival Navy in an Eleven Sports televised broadcast on March 30 at 1 p.m.
That game will propel the team into the Rugby Championships that begin April 13.
Army will also take part in 7s rugby this spring, with the Black Knights traveling to Annapolis on May 4 to take part in the All-Academy 7s Tournament. The 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship will take place June 1-2 in Philadelphia, Pa.
"We've had some internal challenges over the winter and we'll have some new guys given the opportunity to step up and we know they will," said Sherman.
