Army Falls To Navy In Men's Outdoor Star Meet
April 06, 2019 | Men's Track and Field
The Midshipmen built an early lead that the Black Knights could not overcome, claiming the Star in a 110-93 victory. The result gives Navy a 10-9 lead in the 2018-19 Star Series presented by USAA.
Army's day was highlighted by a program record setting performance by sophomore Geoff Kirk, who set a new shot put mark with a throw of 17.82 meters. The throw topped teammate Mike Renard's record of 17.68, which was set just two weeks ago at the Penn Challenge.
COACH'S CORNER: Head Coach Mike Smith
"Pretty disappointing day for us. We had a few shining moments, but not nearly enough to balance our deficiencies. All year long we have shown great determination and grit and today that was absent.
Justin Young was pretty disappointed in his 110HH race. He hit a few hurdles and that cost him. He made up for it in the 400IH. He ran a really strong race there and his time today will be one of the top times in the East Region.
Geoff Kirk won two events today and re-set the school record in the shot put. Overall, I thought our throwers did an excellent job today. They have carried us all year and today was no exception.
Maybe the most impressive performance today came from Tyrese Bender in the triple jump. That is the first time he has jumped over 50 feet and he picked a great time to do it.
Our team is capable of much more than what we saw out there today. Maybe this will be a wake up call for us. We have a month to get ready for the league championship. We will be ready."
