Men’s Tennis Edges Illinois State For First Win

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army Black Knights recorded their first win of the season with a 4-3 win over the Illinois State Redbirds in their final match of the Arthur Ashe Invitational.

Doubles
The Black Knights battled their way to the doubles point with wins in two and three doubles. The No. 2 tandem of Vishnu Bodavula and Nathan Jose edged Melker Isaksson and Diego LaGal Perez, 6-4. A.J. Woodman and Jake Huarte outlasted Dominick Cuchran and Diego Herrera, 7-5, in three doubles.

Singles
The six singles were split by both teams, and all were decided in straight sets. A.J. Woodman defeated Pol Botifoll Rius, 6-3, 6-2, in two singles. Army picked up wins in the bottom half of the lineup. In five singles, Vishnu Bodavula defeated Arvid Hjalte, 6-3, 6-3, and doubles partner Nathan Jose beat Dominick Cuchran, 7-5, 6-1, in six singles.

"This was a great weekend for our team to kick off the season. It was an opportunity for everyone to play against good competition and get some good matches under our belts. The energy was great the whole weekend and it helped our team. I think everyone has a better idea of the things we need to work on moving throughout the season. Overall, it was a great weekend and we always look forward to the Arthur Ashe Invitational because of all of the good teams that come."
