HAMILTON, N.Y. - Army West Point men's soccer earned a point on the road with a 1-1 draw against Colgate on Saturday night. Gage Guerra scored the equalizing goal in the 77th minute after the Raiders went ahead in the 71st minute through a penalty kick.
In an unchanged starting XI for Army, Gage Guerra made himself known early by way of firing the first shot on goal in the 8th minute, forcing a save from Andrew Cooke in net for the Raiders. The Black Knights had an early chance off a corner in the 11th minute, with Max Andrews seeing his effort well saved.
The first half was anything but end-to-end, with Colgate winning the corner battle 3-1 while Army held the advantage in shots 5-4. The teams went into the half tied scoreless. Army seemingly came out the stronger side after the break, with both Sam Epitime and Colgate's Aidan Davock seeing tame efforts saved.
With 20 minutes remaining, it seemed destined for a 0-0 draw until pinball in the Army box led to a handball and penalty awarded to the Raiders. Tomas Hut did everything he could in net, getting a palm on the strike from Bobby Foose but the power was simply too much to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
However, the Black Knights quickly responded with Epitime drawing a foul to set Cooper Warren up with a free kick within the Colgate half. Warren's ball was met first by Nick Atkinson, who was able to flick it onto the goal line. Dylan Mitchiner was then there to head the ball square in front of net, with Gage Guerra beating the Colgate goalie to the spot and tapping home his ninth goal of the season in the 77th minute.
Army kept the pressure on following the goal, seeing three corners in the ensuing minutes, with Guerra and Justin McStay seeing shots to no avail. Ultimately, both teams took the point as Guerra's goal proved the difference for Army who have not lost on the road since their opening game of the season at Michigan State.
