WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army Men's Soccer fell to American 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Malek Stadium at Clinton Field. Army's record moves to 1-8-3 on the season with a 0-6-0 mark in Patriot League play and moves American to 4-6-4 overall, with a 4-1-1 conference record.
How it Happened:
The Black Knights opened the match with a strong defensive showing, weathering heavy early pressure from the Eagles to battle to a scoreless first half. Jubril Bamgbala set the tone for the Army attack out of the gate, firing a strike just wide right in the 6'. The Army backline stood tall against a relentless American attack that generated seven first-half corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Blair Camargo came up with a crucial save in the 23' to deny a dangerous attempt by American's Yuta Phoenix. Finding their footing late in the opening half, the Black Knights generated back-to-back opportunities in the 36', with Ronald Zhai seeing a promising attempt blocked by the defense before defender Kelly Cooper sent a shot just over the crossbar.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Black Knights tested the American defense. In the 60', substitute Kasem Minzey delivered a strike on target, forcing American goalkeeper Evan Tubbs to make a difficult save to keep the game scoreless.
Army's offensive push continued in the 65' as Justin Davidyock found space for a shot that was ultimately blocked by the Eagles' defense. Bamgbala remained a constant threat for the Black Knights throughout the afternoon, nearly breaking the stalemate in the 77' with a shot on goal that required another critical save from Tubbs.
Despite Army's second-half efforts that kept the game deadlocked for nearly 80 minutes, American managed to break through late in the contest. Following a Camargo save on Oliver Snowdon in the 79', Snowdon collected the ball and set up Nicholas Beil, who found the back of the net in the 80' to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Bamgbala created two rapid-fire chances in an attempt to knot the score, sending shots wide in the 83' and 85', while Liam Tucker rocketed an attempt high in the 87'. American capitalized on an opportunity in the final moments of the match, as Reyes Parra scored in the 89' off a feed from Moad Ezzahir to bring the final score to 2-0.
