Coach's Corner
"Our women were focused, disciplined and ran with great effort today. We had high hopes of competing for the win and at the halfway point we were in the lead but we just couldn't hold onto that lead. Our runner up finish was better than last year and we avenged our loss to Boston University from the Paul Short meet. Although we were disappointed to finish 2nd, I thought we ran as well as we could. This conference is getting better and better and the caliber of athlete on the rosters of these teams is as high as it has ever been. We have to continue to raise our level of training and competitive expectations if we want to win. Having said that, I couldn't expect much more out of this group than what they put out there today. We were the best team in the meet up front with three women in the top six but Navy had better depth than we did and that made the difference. That is not to say that our 4th and 5th runners didn't compete well today because I thought they they did. Abigail Mcilvain measured her effort early in the race and kept moving forward all the way until the final hill and with 1000m to go I thought she might catch up to Laurynn but she ran out of race and never quite got up there. Laurynn Sisneros was aggressive early and put herself in the hunt. That has worked well for her this year and it kept her in it today on a very challenging course. She just could not hold onto her early place. For those two women, today's race was a nice improvement and was very competitive. Our top three were great today. Joanna Halfhill was 41st in this race a year ago and after a summer of committed work, she has made herself into one of the top women in our conference. She was never outside the top 10 in this race; a feat that was nearly impossible a year ago. She usually goes out hard and just tries to hang on but today she just kept hammering and driving forward. She had the best finishing kick she has ever had. Georgia Jones ran as our number two and was a little off today. That might be the first time I have uttered that phrase with her name in a sentence. She woke up on Thursday morning feeling sick and just wasn't able to shake it by today. She's not one for excuses but sometimes things are out of your control and you just have to make the best of it. Her run today speaks to how tough she really is. Her "off" is better than most athletes "on". She was a part of the lead group until the last mile and fought all the way to the finish line to secure a 5th place finish for the team. She will recover and be as determined as ever over the next two weeks as we prepare for the regional meet. Charlotte Richman was a star today. She didn't win the meet, she was third, but the women that finished ahead of her are very good and she is just figuring out how to race at this level. She was relentless from the gun. I saw her at the first kilometer and cautioned her to be patient but she would have none of it. She kept pushing at the front and challenging for the lead. It was as if she had no idea how good those women were. Or what is more likely, she just didn't care. She was totally locked in on winning and it was written all over her face. When you have an athlete like that you just have to let them do what they do. She was going to hammer the pace or die trying. It was inspiring to watch and what makes her performance even more incredible is her workload. There was no other athlete on that starting line today managing as much as she is. She is playing basketball full time, she is a cadet at West Point and she runs on the side. You can't help but marvel at what she is able to do. We are lucky she is on our team and we have coach Traversi to thank for recruiting her. I told the women to hold their heads high and keep trying to figure out how to solve the problem. We didn't come here to get second. We recognize that we performed well, but the goal is to win. I have good problem solvers on this team and they will figure it out." - Director of Track & Field Mike Smith
