Rifle Sets Team Highs in Tri-Match

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army's West Point rifle team set season highs in aggregate, smallbore and air rifle, but it wasn't enough as the Black Knights fell to GARC opponents Akron and North Carolina State in their tri-match home opener Saturday.
The rifle squad compiled a season high 4651 (2312 smallbore and 2339 air rifle) in bowing to the Zips (4678) and Wolfpack (4676). Leading the way for Army was junior Anusha Pakkam who posted team highs in aggregate (1173), smallbore (585) and air rifle (588).
SMALLBORE
Pakkam's 585 smallbore score earned her third-place honors, just three points off winner Ben Salas of NC State and one shy of runner-up honors. Claudia Sigel and Ashley Clegg rounded out Army's top three shooters in that event posting a 581 and 580, respectively.
Army's score of 2312 trailed No. 9 Akron's score of 2318, but NC State took team honors with a 2329.
AIR RIFLE
Akron grabbed five of the top six individual finishes in air rifle before Pakkam broke into the leaders placing eighth with a 588. Ashton O'Connell placed just one point behind with a 587 to rank 14th with plebe Chris Jennings next firing a 584 in his first collegiate meet.
AGGREGATE
Pakkam broke into the top 10 leaders, placing sixth with an 1173 just four points off the leader and two shy of second place.
COACH'S CORNER
"I am proud of how the team performed today regardless of the outcome," said head coach Leighton Dempster. "We handled our emotions well and determined what we need to work on heading into the President's Trophy match next weekend. "Our culture is the most important thing, so we're working on confidence heading into our next couple of matches."
