Coach's Corner
"I thought coming into the meet that a top-ten finish was realistic for the men, so our 12th place finish is a little disappointing. It's not that we weren't prepared or committed or disciplined, we just couldn't put together a race today where all five of our guys performed at the level of their fitness. That's not to say that we didn't have some good individual performances, because we did. I thought Matt Porter had a pretty strong race today. Today was the first time he's been our number one all year. He got out well early in the race then held his position and finished strong. While this was the first time he has led us on the course, he has been our undisputed leader and our most consistent performer all year. He closed out his cross country career with his best Regional finish ever. I am proud of his effort today. Thomas Vo put together the best race that he has run all year and we needed that today. It's not that he hasn't been in shape to perform or committed to performing, he just couldn't quite put together a good race until today. Today was what we expect from him. Isaac Morris was our number four and he has emerged as a very consistent performer. Today was his first 10K and he handled it very well. Erick Lara was our fifth runner today. I was glad to see him put himself in the race early. He showed some real guts throughout the race and just ran out of gas over the last mile. Garrett Gough was a little off today and that's unusual for him. We look to him to be our number one and he was our number one throughout much of the race. He has a tremendous ability to withstand pain and today he ran as hard as he could. He remained committed to the race but wasn't able to finish where he thought he could. He had a great year and he accomplished a lot, I'm proud of the season that he had. In the end, we didn't achieve all of our goals, but the guys were disciplined every step of the way and never stopped trying. Sports can be pretty humbling at this level. When you get knocked down you just have to get back up. These guys have learned to handle adversity. I feel good about the way they are handling the outcome today and I think they'll be better for it tomorrow." - Director of Track & Field Mike Smith
