Davis qualified individually with a 6th-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet this past weekend, posting a time of 30:05.34 in the 10K in New Hampshire.
He became the first Black Knight to qualify for the NCAA meet in four seasons with Marshall Beatty being the last, as Davis also led Army to a second-place finish at the Patriot League Championships with a second-place individual finish. Davis was the lone Patriot League runner to qualify.
Davis is the sixth Army male runner to qualify for the NCAA meet since 1996, joining Scott Goff in 1998, John Mickowski in 2007, John Valeri in 2017, Roman Ollar in 2018 and Beatty in 2020-21. Army has qualified as a team on ten occasions, most recently in 1996.Â
"It was in the back of my mind that I could qualify for this meet back in the summer," said Davis. "I have a notebook that I call my 'leader book' and I take notes in the book to foster my leader development. On June 21, 2024, I thought about the upcoming cross-country season, and I wrote in my book- Nationals, Madison, Wisconsin 2024. I felt compelled to write it. Going into the season, I wanted to make sure that everyone on our team was on the same page. So, when the thought came to me, I wrote it down. I don't write anything down that I don't think I am capable of. I feel prepared to step onto the national stage. I feel like I belong.I think that at West Point, excellence is the standard and this meet represents the highest standard in cross country. I am trying to pursue excellence in everything that I do, and this meet is a chance for me to raise the image of Army cross country on the national stage."
Director of Track & Field Mike Smith added:
"This is the best cross country meet in the world. In the 2023 NCAA cross country championship there were at least six Paris Olympians in the race. Maybe there were more, but I know for sure that there were six. That gives you an idea of the talent in the field of 255 runners. So, we are honored to have Nathan Davis '26 representing our program and the United States Military Academy on the national stage on Saturday. He is the only service academy athlete in the meet, so he is carrying the flag for much more than just himself. He knows this and is looking forward to the challenge."
