Army Sweeps Monmouth, Drops Match to Cornell

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's tennis team split its Saturday afternoon at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center, defeating Monmouth 5-0 before falling to Cornell, 4-0.
Army 5, Monmouth 0
The Black Knights (15-7) began the day with dominant performances in doubles, securing the early point opposite the Hawks (3-8). The duo of MaryJo Pidgeon and Anna Loureiro posted a 6-1 victory at the third spot in the lineup before Elizabeth Gilbert and Paulina Feoli locked up the point with a 6-2 result.
The momentum followed the team into singles, as Feoli quickly defeated her opponent in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) on the fourth court. McKenzie then put the Cadets on the verge of clinching the match by defeating a Hawk 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot before Julia Kelly officially locked up the win with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at the sixth flight.
Within seconds of Kelly finishing her match, Gilbert completed a straight-set takedown (6-3, 6-2) at No. 2 singles, pushing Army to its final margin of victory at 5-0.
Cornell 4, Army 0
The second match did not go in the Cadets' favor, as the team was swept at home for just the second time all season.
Cornell (3-7) built its lead early in the match, posting a 6-4 result at No. 3 doubles before securing a 1-0 advantage with a 7-5 result at the second spot. At the time the early point was awarded, the tandem of Stephanie Dolehide and Caroline Vincent faced just a one-point deficit on the top court (5-4).
The Big Red continued to compile wins in singles play, first posting a straight-set result of 6-3, 6-1 at the sixth flight. The visiting team then picked up back-to-back wins on the second and third courts to collect the win. Both Paola Bou and Cooper Jackson forced their opposition into three sets.
What's Next
Army will open up Patriot League play on Friday, March 25 with a doubleheader against Lafayette and Holy Cross. The Black Knights will take on the Leopards at Noon before hosting the Crusaders at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
