COACH'S CORNER
"It was a tough day for our teams today. We were prepared and we competed well but in the overall scheme of things, we were just not good enough. Both of our teams (men and women) are as good as they have ever been. We continue to set more program records than any team before us. We continue to add names to the all-time top 10 lists weekly. We are breaking service academy records and meet records and yet our collective bests have not been good enough to win the Star meet. I told our teams that the individual improvements that people are making are exactly what we expect. But the bar for success today was measured not in individual wins or great performances but on the overall team outcome. We did not measure up to the standard. The bar for success has been raised higher and we need to continue to elevate our expectations of what "good" is if we want to win.
We were a little short-handed today due to some injuries to some key people and those absences cost us quite a bit. Today's loss was a tough lesson for our teams but one that will serve them well in the future. The loss, while painful can be an excuse to give up or it can be a motivation to overcome adversity. I am confident that we will recognize the value that can be found in failure and keep pushing toward a new level of good. That is my expectation. There were some individual highlights today that reflect that new level of good.
Our throwers were dominant on both the men's and women's sides. We won both hammer throws, both discus throws and both shot puts. On the men's side, Jamir Gibson collected 2 wins and did what he always does. He put up some big marks and kept the pressure on the entire series. On the women's side, Abigail Green had a nice series in the hammer to take the win and Emily Fink followed up her early-season success by winning the shot put convincingly. Karly Parcell was a nice surprise winner in the discus. She improved to #6 all-time on the top 10 list with her winning throw of 157' 3". We swept the top 3 spots in the women's shot, the women's hammer, and the women's discus. It was an impressive day for those women. On the men's side, we won 8 of the 19 events but did not have enough of the 2nd and 3rd place finishes to close the gap in the overall score. Justin Young had a great meet. After struggling the last two years with some injuries, he showed up today and performed very well. His 400IH race was his first in close to three years and he looked strong and won the race with ease. He was dominant on the second leg of our winning 4x100 and ran a great leg on the winning 4x400m relay team. We put him out there a lot today and he was a star.
Our meets get more and more competitive as we move forward, and I expect that we will rise to the challenge and continue to improve." – Mike Smith
