COACH'S CORNER
"Going into the meet I had us second in scoring on both the men's and women's sides so our runner-up finishes today were not unexpected. We scored in the areas where we knew we could and where we expected to score but, in the end, we just didn't have enough scoring opportunities to come out on top on with either of our teams.
Today marks seven consecutive runner-up finishes for our men at this meet. We had the third highest point total since I have been here in what was quite possibly the most difficult weather weekend I have ever experienced at a conference championship. The rain came at us sideways at times blown by wind gusts that reached 25mph. There was no escaping the soaking and eventually you just had to accept it. I stood in my own puddle of water in each of my boots for the better part of 8 hours.
Having said that, I thought our athletes handled the conditions much better than I did. We won five events today on the men's side and Jamir Gibson won two of them. He opened up his day with a win in the shot put and closed out the day by winning the discus. He has been our points leader all year and today was more of the same. He scored 24 points for Army this weekend and took home the field event athlete of the meet award. It was a fitting end to a remarkable conference career. Now he can look ahead to the NCAA where he will measure himself against some of the best young talent on the planet.
Ryan Hogan won the 200 today and did so by running a great turn. He came off the turn in a tie for the lead but then showed the most power down the stretch in taking the win. He has been close in this event before but the title had always eluded him, but not today. Our other double champion of the day was Justin Young. He has battled adversity throughout his career and was disqualified yesterday in the 110hurdles. It was a deflating moment for him but didn't seem to affect him today. He was dominating in the 400IH in what was a satisfying end to his individual conference career. He closed out the scoring by anchoring our 4x400m relay to the win in the 4x400. We have often run him much earlier in the relay to take advantage of his speed but today we felt better about having him bring us home and he did that without any trouble. The other guys on that relay did a nice job of setting the table and Justin would it be denied in getting to the line first. There were other great performances and runner up finishes for us today. I saw great competitive effort across the board. In the end we just need to get better. The conference as a whole is better and we need to raise our game if we want to win." – Mike Smith
