TEANECK, N.J. - Army West Point men's soccer earned a 1-1 draw on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson after a Brandon Bryant equalizer in the 49th minute. The Black Knights have come out of halftime to net a quick goal in both contests this season after trailing at the half.
Army saw four cadets make their first career starts for the program, including Max Andrews, Eric Lusskin, Skyler Smith and local northern New Jersey's Jacob Lee. The first chance of the game came in the 13th minute from a Fairleigh Dickinson corner. The inswinging ball forced a scramble in the box which led to a penalty awarded to the home side after a foul in front of goal. Army goalie Josh Taylor did all he could in net, standing tall to make the save on the penalty kick, only for the rebound to be tucked home by FDU's Tony Gomez. The Black Knights lone attempt on target in the half would come just three minutes later, with Gage Guerra forcing a save from a tight angle.
Much like Friday's season opener, the Black Knights came out with a sense of urgency to begin the second half. This time, it took less than five minutes to find a goal, with Brandon Bryant firing home a left-shooted shot after being played in by Gage Guerra. The goal was Bryant's first of the season after netting four last season in under 500 minutes of action. Army controlled much of the second half before going down to ten men with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Black Knights continued to press forward across the final 20, with Andrews getting a header on target off a corner and Gage Guerra continuing to pester the FDU defense with multiple shots to test the Knights keeper. Ultimately, neither team was destined to find a winner despite the man-advantage for the home side. Fairleigh Dickinson held an SOG advantage of 5-1 in the first half while Army posted a 4-1 edge across the final 45 minutes.
Cadet Capsule's
- Firstie Josh Taylor made five saves in net while making season debut, including a stop on the early penalty kick.
- Brandon Bryant netted the fifth goal of his career and first of the season coming off the bench for the Black Knights.
- Gage Guerra notched an assist on the Black Knights goal while pacing the team in shots (3) and shots on goal (2).
Coach's Corner
"Credit to FDU, they are a well coached team. We came out flat in the first half which was disappointing but I was proud of the team's fight in the second half to get a goal back and nearly find a winner. We talk about the importance of set pieces and didn't take care of the details on it tonight and it led to their goal. We will recover and are excited to prepare for our home opener on Friday." - head coach Brian Plotkin.
