Men’s Soccer Earn Point Against Marist
August 28, 2025 | Men's Soccer
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Despite playing the final 12 minutes down two men, the Army West Point men's soccer team came away with a point in its first road game of the season, as Marist and Army played a scoreless 90 minutes in Tenney Stadium on Thursday night.
Army (1-1-1) used impressive goalkeeping and defensive play to secure a positive result in the Black Knights opening road contest of the season. Collin Gilbert and Michael Guiry combined to make 10 saves. Gilbert, a freshman making the first start of his career, made seven saves in over 77 minutes of action before receiving a red card late in the second half. Guiry, who recorded the win in Sunday's victory over Penn State, made four saves in his 12-plus minutes of action.
Prior to Gilbert's red card, Marist was already on the man-advantage, as Army's Owen Ennis received a red card in the 62nd minute for denying a goal scoring opportunity.
Even though it was shorthanded, Army had one of the best scoring chances of the night as Kelly Cooper nearly found on the back of the net on a corner opportunity with just under nine minutes left to play. Army finished with eight total shots, four on goal, while Marist had 22 total shots.
It was a chippy performance all night long, as the two teams combined for 29 total fouls – 18 on Army and 11 on Marist. The Black Knights were booked four times on yellow cards and twice on reds. Marist received three yellow cards.
Thursday was the first time since Oct. 15, 2024, that Army earned a point on the road.
Quotable – head coach Brian Plotkin
"We felt short of our expectations. I think getting a shutout was a goal, and I am proud of the group for that. However, I think the game wasn't in the control that we want. It got really open and uncertain in the second half. Those aren't the games that we want to be in. We want to be in control of it. In the second half, we clearly weren't. When we went down one and then went down two, I thought the team did a great job of rallying. We created a really good moment from the corner where we almost stole the game. Overall, anytime you can go on the road… and get a tie, particularly with a shutout, it's a positive."
