WEST POINT, NY - Army men's tennis continued its fall schedule this past weekend, competing in both the Varner Memorial Cup hosted by Rollins College and the Binghamton Mock Duals hosted by Binghamton University.
At the Varner Memorial Cup in Winter Park, Florida, Army took on Rollins, Stetson and Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). Beginning on Friday against Rollins, Army fell in each singles match while Paul Roberts and Anthony Shalakov collected a tiebreaker victory on the doubles court. Army fell to Stetson on Saturday, failing to log any wins over the Hatters. Roberts continued his strong doubles play against SCAD on Sunday, claiming a 6-2 victory alongside Lucas Pak. Army split the singles matchups with the Bees three apiece. Pak collected a (7-5, 6-3) win on court four while Roberts posted a dominant (6-2, 6-0) win on court five. Plebe Preston Achter also recorded his first victory of the weekend, with an (0-6, 6-4, 10-6) come-from-behind win.
At the Binghamton Muck Duals in Binghamton, N.Y., the Black Knights began with a matchup against Binghamton on Friday morning. The Bearcats secured the doubles point, despite a (6-3) win on court three from Jake Huarte and Michael Rooney. Huarte continued his strong play in singles, posting a (6-3, 6-3) win on court three. Vishnu Bodavula (6-3, 6-1) on flight two and Daniel Choi (7-6, 6-3) on flight five also registered wins in singles for the Black Knights, but the doubles point proved costly as Binghamton took the match 4-3.
Army earned a victory on Saturday against Monmouth, this time claiming the doubles point as Daniel Zhou and Daniel Choi were victorious along with Huarte and Rooney again. Huarte (7-5, 7-5) and Choi (6-4, 6-3) made good in singles as well, but it was a come-from-behind and tiebreak victory for Marcus Sebastian (4-6, 6-2, 14-12) which achieved the win for the Cadets. Army returned on Sunday to battle NJIT, falling in doubles despite a (6-2) win on court three via Jake Huarte and Michael Rooney. Rooney logged the lone singles victory for the Black Knights on flight six (7-5, 6-3) as the Highlanders wrapped up the competition with a 6-1 victory.
The Black Knights will return next weekend at Air Force to close out the fall season, taking on the Falcons thrice beginning on Friday at 10:00 a.m. MT.
