Mens Rugby Set for USA Rugby D1A Playoffs
April 06, 2023 | Men's Rugby
WEST POINT, NY – The No. 4 Army West Point men's rugby team is set for the first round of the USA Rugby D1A National Championship Playoffs against No. 5 Davenport on April 6th at noon at the Anderson Rugby Complex.
"We have had a great week of training leading up to the Davenport game," assistant coach Jake Mizell said. "Our focus has been continuing to hunt our best performance and peaking at the right time. The team is feeling good about the steps we took forward last week with the win against Arkansas State and we are looking to improve on that against Davenport. I feel like we are really playing our brand of rugby now and are looking forward to carrying that momentum against a talented Davenport team."
The game will be streamed for free on The Rugby Network.
"Saturday starts playoffs, that means nothing is promised," Mike Amberg said. "It doesn't matter how this season has gone to this point or what we've done. We have 1 more game left in the year promised to us and an opportunity to gain another. I'm confident the boys will give their all and play their best for 80 minutes."
Tiaan Mosconi is in the running for the 2023 Scholz Award which is given out to the best men's college rugby player in the nation each year. Fans can vote for who they want to become a finalist by clicking here.
"The brothers are ready for another opportunity to play at Warrior Field," Mosconi said. "The focus still remains on us and our insatiable climb to be the fastest improving team. We are ready and looking forward to the challenge ahead."
With a win, the Black Knights will head to Annapolis to take on No. 1 Navy for a third time on April 15.
The winner of that matchup will take on the winner of No. 2 Lindenwood vs. No. 3 Life/No. 6 Texas A&M in the National Semifinal.
On the other side of the bracket, Central Washington earned the No. 1 seed and Saint Mary's earned the other bye as the No. 2 seed.
No. 4 BYU will host No. 5 Arizona with the winner heading to take on No. 1 Central Washington. No. 3 Cal will face No. 6 Cal Poly in a match to determine who will face No. 2 Saint Mary's.
