Women's Soccer Earns Huge Draw on the Road Against Wake Forest
August 20, 2023 | Women's Soccer
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Army West Point women's soccer team earned a hard fought 1-1 draw against Wake Forest on Sunday at Spry Stadium.
In her return to her alma mater head coach Tracy Chao said "At the end of the day I couldn't be more proud of our team. We talked about making the choice to work hard, be intentional with our communication, and play how we want to play. I think no matter who was on the other side they were able to execute that. It's just an unbelievable point on the road it's hard to win on the road and I think that especially against a team like Wake who is going to be somebody who you will see go far throughout the rest of the season."
The first half saw Army get the first shot of the game just four minutes into the game when Brigid Duffy sent one just wide of the net.
Wake responded with two shots of their own, but Sage Strohman made easy work of them.
In the 25th minute Strohman would be tested with two shots at point blank range and she was able to somehow turn both of them away to keep things scoreless.
The Black Knights got a shot on frame off of a free kick in the 40th minute after Wake was shown a yellow card but the Demon Deacon keeper was able to make the save.
For the first 25 minutes Army controlled possession but Wake Forest was able to create sustained pressure in the final 20 minutes of the first half.
The first thirty minutes of the second half saw the Demon Deacons put a lot of pressure on the Army back line but the Black Knights were able to keep them off the board.
In the 59th minute Maddie Niebish had the best chance to that point as she sent a screamer to the keepers left and she made a spectacular leaping save to keep the game tied at zero.
With just 14 minutes left in the game, Kaelan Bradley went cutting towards the net from the far left side. She sent a cross in that got deflected to Elizabeth Oberhaus near the center of the box, who sent the ball to the back post, and it found Jasmine Talley's right foot and the then the back of the net to put the Black Knights up 1-0.
In the 86th minute Wake Forest would tie things up on a goal from Caiya Hanks.
The game would end in a 1-1 draw as Army would pick up a massive result on the road against an ACC team.
Next up Army will take on Wagner on Thursday, Aug. 24 at 7:00 PM.
