October 11, 2024 | Men's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. — The Army West Point men's rugby team (3-1) is ready to return to action after a bye week as they take on Rugby East rival Penn State (0-3) in State College.
The Black Knights come into the match with a 3-1 record, with victories over Indiana and Rugby East opponents Mary Washington and Southern Virginia.
In their last outing two weeks ago, the Black Knights fell to Navy. However, they've used the bye week to regroup and are determined to finish the fall season on a strong note.
Head coach Matt Sherman said, "We can't wait to get to Penn State and compete. We were bitterly disappointed in our performance the last time out, and chomping at the bit to execute at the level we believe we are capable of. We will need to do so earn victory against a tough Penn State with a new coach and identity."
Senior TJ Rotello, who leads the team in tries so far this season with three, added, "We had a very restful and intentional bye week where we got healthy and put in a lot of work for the back half of the season. As a team, we are excited and confident for the weeks to come. We've gotten back to our identity as Army Rugby and are focused internally on our growth as a team, as men, and as leaders."
Penn State heads into the matchup with a 0-3 record, following losses to Mount St. Mary's, Navy, and St. Bonaventure. The Nittany Lions will be looking to secure their first win of the season.
The Black Knights and the Nittany Lions have faced off 14 times in history, with the series tied at 7-7. In their most recent encounter last season, the Black Knights defeated Penn State 26-6 at home.
Landin Duffy added, "We had a great week of practice, and the energy is high. This week is another opportunity for us to get a big win on the road and continue to strive toward our best."
The match is scheduled to kick off at 1:00 PM on Saturday. Fans can catch the action live here.
