Golf Leads Navy After Four-Ball Matches

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Thanks to strong performances throughout the lineup, the Army West Point golf team took a 3-1 lead in the Army-Navy Star Match after the four-ball matches at the West Point Golf Course.

The Black Knights got up early in the three matches won and stayed in the lead throughout the round.

John Heckel Jr. and Drew Jeffords were on fire early and won the first five holes and six of the opening seven. They kept it at 5 up through 10 and then won holes 11 and 12 to win a point for the Black Knights at 7 & 6.

Rob Ferris and Joshua Rooker were a good tandem and took the 1-up lead on hole three with Rooker, who was playing in his first Army-Navy match, sinking a putt. The pair were 2-up through the first nine holes and then extended the lead to 3-up through 12 holes They wrapped up the match on the 16th and won 3 & 2.

The longest match of the day came from the pair of Josh Kim and Tyson Sparks, who was playing his first Army-Navy match. They were 3 up on the 12th, but Navy started to gain some momentum late in the round. The Black Knights responded with Josh Kim dropping a nice putt on 15 to halve the hole and keep Army 2-up with three to play. The two pairs halved the par 3 16th and then Tyson Sparks drained a clutch putt on the 17th to win the hole and match at 3 & 1.

Navy's Ben Valdez and Owen Huntington were impressive in the first group of the day and won their match against Dragon Theam and Lake Kim at 4 & 3.

The two teams do battle again tomorrow with seven singles matches to decide the Star. The first pair tees off at 8:30 AM at the West Point Golf Course.
