Women’s Rugby Claims NIRA Win Over Pioneers in a Show of Perseverance

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Army women's rugby traveled to Fairfield, Conn. to face off with their next league opponent in a matchup against the Sacred Heart Pioneers. The Pioneers struck first but Army remained steadfast in their work and battled back into the lead to claim a 26-20 win.
Just over six minutes into the action, Sacred Heart worked the home field advantage in their favor at Park Ave. Field, breaching the try line and getting on the board first.
From there on out the two teams delivered a mighty clash between defensive powerhouses, holding the score still until the 25-minute mark when McKhaye O'Boyle completed a push from the Black Knights and putting a try on the board for Army that Alissa Eisenhart converted on to give Army a 7-5 lead.
The Pioneers responded in short order, briefly shocking the Black Knights as they notched a try and conversion of their own only two minutes later to give Sacred Heart a 12-7 lead.
Army's squad battled viciously to even the score and found paydirt at the halftime break as Alyssa Davis carried the ball into the right end of the try zone and Eisenhart made her second conversion of the game.
Five minutes back into the action after halftime the Pioneers cut the difference down with a penalty kick before the Black Knights responded with another pushing try from O'Boyle to put Army up 19-15.
The Black Knights held the momentum, finding the try zone again with Eisenhert completing a heads-up play as she intercepted a Pioneer pass and carried the ball all the way home, completing the conversion only a few minutes later to push Army up 26-15 at the 73-minute mark.
Sacred Heart made their way into the try zone for a final time as the minutes wore down, but Army's defense held them off as they attempted another score in the final drive of the game to claim their second NIRA win of the season.
