Women's Soccer Defeated 2-1 in Extra Time in Patriot League Semifinal at Boston University
November 07, 2024 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON - Army West Point women's soccer (12-6-1, 5-3-1 Patriot League) fell in extra time by a score of 2-1 in the Patriot League semifinals against second-seeded Boston University (6-7-6, 5-0-4 Patriot League) on Thursday night from Nickerson Field.
Boston U scored the game-winner with 71 seconds remaining in extra time after fighting from a goal down to extend the game past 90 minutes. Kaelan Bradley scored the lone goal for Army on a penalty kick after Brigid Duffy won the penalty with a run into the box.
The Terriers put the pressure on early, eventually firing nine shots in the opening half compared to three for the Black Knights. Boston was only able to test Sage Strohman three times in the half however, with the conference goalkeeper of the year being up to the task each time.
The game flipped in the 30th minute when Brigid Duffy broke through the Terriers' defense and got in goal before being fouled in the box to prevent the scoring chance. Kaelan Bradley stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake with a driven finish into the bottom left corner which gave Army a 1-0 lead.
Army maintained its lead until Boston finally found its breakthrough in the 68th minute, as Morgan Fagan slotted home the equalizing goal off a rebound after Strohman made a fine save on Giulianna Gianino. Army was unable to generate a goal to regain its lead.
Both teams had chances in the box to find a winner in regulation but the sides remained tied at one through the second half and extra time was needed to decide the winner. BU led in shots, 16-6, in the first 90 minutes while Army had 5 corner kicks compared to two for the home side.
Army best chance of the extra 20 minutes came with Bradley in the box in the closing minutes, but the Terrier defense covered and got a crucial block in which forced a corner. With under 90 seconds until penalty kicks, Margy Porta found the back of the net off a pass from Morgan Fagan to send Boston into the Patriot League Championship game to face Bucknell.
Army finishes the season with 12 total wins, the most from the program since the 2011 season.
