March 02, 2024 | Men's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's rugby team picked up a massive win on Saturday afternoon against Cal.
Cal entered the game outscoring opponents 678-111 but the Black Knights held them to just 14 points en route to a 27-14 victory for the Black Knights first win over the Golden Bears.
Jonny Haley got the scoring started with a penalty kick at 35:40 to go up 3-0. About five minutes later Dom Tianga scored on a try to push it to 10-0 after Haley converted.
Cal would get a try and a conversion to make it 10-7 but Tianga came back with another try to make it 17-7 going into halftime.
The second half saw the Golden Bears get a try and a conversion to make it just a three point game but a Haley penalty kick and then a Nathan Gould try would extend the lead to 27-14.
The Black Knights would kill off the remaining 22 minutes to hold on for a huge win to start the spring portion of their season.
Next up is a battle with Guelph for senior day on March 9 at noon at the Anderson Rugby Complex.
HEAR FROM THE GUYS
Dom Tianga: The feeling of winning this game is indescribable. We won this game in honor of our recent fallen brother. The brothers made him and the whole legacy of Army rugby proud.
Nate Gould: I'm very happy with how our team played today. Our discipline and physicality applied lots of pressure to Cal which allowed us to get the win. I'm thankful for the work everyone has put in since November to make a great jump forward this spring.
