Men’s Rugby Drops Star Match to Navy
September 28, 2024 | Men's Rugby
ANNAPOLIS, Md.- The Army West Point men's rugby team (3-1) fell to Navy (5-0) in the Star Match as part of the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams battled for field position early in the match, with Army stopping an initial promising drive from Navy side inside their 22-meter zone due to a turnover. Army won the first scrum of the match, but a non-release penalty allowed the Midshipmen to capitalize with a penalty kick in the 5th minute, taking an early 3-0 lead.
Despite efforts from the Black Knights to respond, they found themselves on the back foot as the Midshipmen added two tries before halftime. Army's defense held strong at times, notably when a key tackle near their five-meter zone just before halftime kept the score at 15-0.
The second half saw Army struggling to contain Navy, with an early try extending the lead. Army threatened in spurts but was unable to break through consistently. The Midshipmen's defense proved difficult to penetrate, as Army's kicks and clear attempts failed to gain enough ground.
Army did avoid a shutout late in the match when Nate Gould powered through the defense to score the Black Knights' only try. Despite the effort, Army fell to the Midshipmen, 32-5.
