Women’s Basketball Falls to Holy Cross

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (13-4, 5-2 PL) dropped their midweek Education Day game to Holy Cross (13-5, 6-1 PL) by a score of 52-61.
Fiona Hastick led the Black Knights with 13 points and six rebounds. Freshmen Brooke Wilson and Sam Tillson each delivered career-best performances, with Wilson scoring 11 points and Tillson contributing seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game opened with Army securing the tip. Both teams traded possessions and remained scoreless until Holy Cross broke the ice with a layup. Army's Fiona Hastick quickly answered with a driving layup to even the score. The teams continued to exchange missed shots until the five-minute mark when Holy Cross added another layup. Taylor Wilson drew a foul with just under five minutes left, converting both free throws to tie the game. Holy Cross reclaimed the lead with another layup, but Hastick responded with a bucket to keep it even. After being fouled, Hastick hit a free throw with 2:40 left, giving Army a slim lead. Holy Cross quickly answered, but Hastick drained a three-pointer to shift the momentum back to Army. A layup from Brooke Wilson and a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Hastick closed the quarter, giving Army a 15-10 lead.
The second quarter began with tight defense, as neither team scored for the first two-and-a-half minutes. A steal by Kya Smith led to her drawing a foul and hitting two free throws to start the scoring. Holy Cross answered with a three-pointer to cut the deficit. Taylor Wilson extended Army's lead to 18-13 with a strong drive to the basket, but Holy Cross countered with a layup. With just under three minutes remaining, the Crusaders closed within one after a layup. Trinity Hardy responded with a strong finish to make it 20-17. Holy Cross added a free throw before Soleil Montrose extended Army's lead with a jumper in the final seconds. However, a buzzer-beating jumper from Holy Cross cut Army's lead to 22-20 at halftime.
The second half began with Holy Cross tying the game at 22 with a quick layup. Soleil Montrose answered with a driving layup to briefly reclaim the lead, but Holy Cross responded with back-to-back buckets to take a two-point advantage. Kya Smith kept Army close with a free throw and a layup, but a 10-0 run from Holy Cross midway through the quarter pushed their lead to nine. Army fought back, with Sam Tillson hitting a clutch three-pointer, followed by a three from Brooke Wilson to cut the deficit. Despite Army's efforts, Holy Cross closed the quarter leading 40-36.
The fourth quarter opened with Holy Cross hitting an early three-pointer to extend their lead to seven. Army responded with key contributions from Sam Tillson and Brooke Wilson, who hit critical shots to pull within one at 43-42. However, Holy Cross answered with a 5-0 run to rebuild their cushion. The final minutes became a battle at the free-throw line, with both teams capitalizing on their opportunities. Despite a late push by Army, Holy Cross maintained composure and sealed the win at the line, handing Army a 61-52 loss.
