BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point senior Charlotte Richman was named Patriot League Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday morning. In addition, Richman, Claire Lewis, Mikayla Cheney and Maximus Haynia were named to the All-Academic Teams.
"Our men and women work hard to get results on the cross country course. Sometimes they win and sometimes they fall short. But the work never stops. The same is true for what happens in the classroom," said Mike Smith, director of cross country. "We have a responsible group of young men and women in our program that have made academic success a priority. We are honored to have that success recognized by the Patriot League."
Richman, an engineering psychology major, has put together a remarkable athletic career while also excelling in her academics at West Point. She has exemplified remarkable leadership qualities and traits on the track, in the classroom and while being a leader for her fellow cadets and teammates. Richman won the Army-Navy Star Meet last month and was named the Patriot League Runner of the Year after finishing in first place at the Patriot League Championships last Friday. The senior has a 3.69 cumulative undergraduate GPA.
Lewis, a chemical engineering major, has put together an impressive 4.09 cumulative GPA while also competing at a very high level athletically for the Black Knights. As team captain, Lewis has set the standard for what is expected in all aspects of Academy life. Ranking inside the top 30 of her class, Lewis is a consistent member of the Dean's List. At the Patriot League Championships last week, Lewis finished in eighth place to help Army win its third consecutive team championship. She also finished sixth at the Army-Navy Star Meet.
Cheney, an engineering psychology major, is the definition of what it means to be a cadet-athlete. Her performances on the race course and in the classroom are equally as impressive. Her GPA of 3.56 show her impressive ability to compete at a high level athletically, while continuing to excel academically and serve as a leader for her teammates. Cheney finished third at both the Patriot League Championships and Army-Navy Star Meet.
On the men's side, Haynia, a systems engineering major, is the perfect embodiment of a cadet-athlete, as he demonstrates excellence in the academic, military and character development programs at USMA. He not only excels in areas of competition but also in the classroom, where he has posted a 3.61 GPA. He most recently placed 11th in the Patriot League Championship last week.
