Wrestling Battles, but Falls to No. 27 Wisconsin
December 06, 2025 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point wrestling remained within striking distance through the penultimate bout, but the No. 24 Black Knights fell 24-12 to the No. 27 Wisconsin Badgers at Christl Arena on Saturday night.Â
Â
The Black Knights claimed four of the 10 bouts Saturday, and went into the intermission with the team scored tied 9-9 after winning three of the opening five matches. However, a bonus point loss at 197 lbs put the dual mathematically out of reach for Army.
Â
Saturday's dual started at 125 lbs, but Charlie Farmer found himself on the wrong on end a major decision vs. Nicolar Rivera, and the Badgers went ahead 4-0 early.Â
Â
At 133 lbs, Ethan Berginc tied the match with a takedown late in the third period to put the Christl faithful on its feet in the team's first home dual in 2025-26. The junior then followed in overtime with a takedown to complete the sudden victory over Wisconsin's Zan Fuggit—ranked No. 3 in the InterMat poll.
Â
Braden Basile followed at 141 lbs to give Army its first and only lead of the evening, defeating Carson Exferd by decision to put the home side up 6-4.
Â
However, the margin was short-lived, with Mason Barvitskie being dispatched by technical fall by Joe Zargo in the ensuing 149 lb bout.Â
Â
The arguable highlight for Army came in the waning moments at 157 lbs. Down 10-4 in the closing seconds, Joseph Antonio secured a reversal of Luke Mechler before collecting four near-fall points to steal a 10-8 decision and tie the dual at nine.Â
Â
Coming out of the intermission was the 165 lb bout featuring an early lead from Gunner Filipowicz, but Wisconsin's Cody Goebel was able to take a permanent advantage in the third period, and the Badgers never relinquished their dual cushion thereafter. Â
Â
Cooper Haase looked to tie the team score once more at 174 lbs, but gave up an escape point in the closing seconds of his bout against Luke Condon and fell 5-4 after the call withstood replay review.Â
Â
Dave Barrett did get Army back into the dual at 184 lbs, defeating the Badgers' Cale Anderson by decision, 4-1. But Wisconsin put away any doubt in the dual's final pair of matches, with two bonus point wins.Â
Â
Army dipped to 0-2 in duals with the loss.
