WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (21-5, 13-3) cruised to a 75-48 victory over the Lafayette Leopards (7-20, 4-12) on Wednesday afternoon at Christl Arena, clinching a top-four seed in the Patriot League standings, which will give Army a home conference playoff game on Monday, March 10.
Today's game was played at 3pm due to Post Night at the United States Military Academy (Post Night determines where cadets will move after graduation and the type of unit to which they will first be assigned).
Senior Trinity Hardy and freshman Sam Tillson led all scorers with 14 points each.
With the victory, Army clinched a top-four seed in the Patriot League Tournament and is guaranteed to host a Patriot League conference playoff game, the first time doing so since the 2018-19 campaign.
The Black Knights were sparked by hot shooting in the first quarter, leading to a 9-0 run following a three-point play on a driving layup by Taylor Wilson and three-point makes from Tillson and Hardy. Hardy added another three later in the first quarter as well.
Tillson picked up where she left off from the last game, where she scored a career-high 17 points adding 14 points today. Throughout her last two games, Tillson is 5-7 from three-point distance.
Army took a 39-23 lead into the break.
Tillson connected on her second three of the afternoon in the third quarter to extend Army's lead, 44-31.
Lafayette made a dent into Army's 16-point halftime lead throughout the third quarter, outscoring them by six and cutting the lead to just 10 as the game entered the final 10 minutes.
However, Army jumped out on an early 8-0 scoring run to begin the fourth quarter featuring back-to-back three balls from junior guard Reese Ericson, to regain control of the game and the biggest lead of the day at 18 points, 60-42 forcing a timeout. Ericson continued her hot shooting, making a third triple as Army's lead climbed to 21 in what became an 11-0 run.
Army's defense stood tall to secure the victory, as Lafayette did not score its first points until the 2:17 mark of the fourth quarter as Army limited Lafayette to only six points over the final 10 minutes of the game, limiting them to just one field goal make. Army outscored its opponent 23-6 in the fourth.
Ericson shot 4-9 from three point in the game, her seventh game of the season connecting on 4+ three-pointers.
The Leopards had three scorers in double figures, led by Teresa Kiewiet's 14 points.
Army has two regular season contests to go before the Patriot League Tournament, both away, Saturday, March 1 at Lehigh and Wednesday, March 5 at Holy Cross.
Army's now 21 wins are the most since going 22-9 in the 2016-17 season. Furthermore, Army's .807 winning percentage is now the second-best all-time in program history behind the 2015-16 team that went 29-3.
