Men’s Swimming & Diving Makes History on Opening Day of the 2025 NCAA Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Army West Point men's swimming & diving brought the energy from West Point to continue their historic season at the 2025 NCAA Men's Division I Swimming & Diving Championships. The Black Knights finished fourth in their heat and 15th overall in the 200 medley relay to earn the first All-American honors in the event in program history.
Johnny Crush, Kohen Rankin, Daniel Verdolaga, and Ben Vorthmann combined for a 1:23.36 in the event to set a new program and Patriot League record in the first heat of the national meet. Their time replaces the previous league record of 1:23.74 set by Loyola Maryland at the 2025 Patriot League Championships.
The Black Knights had a strong start with Crush clocking a 20.68 for the leadoff leg of the race. Rankin then took over for the breaststroke leg of the race, clocking a 22.94 to keep Army among the leaders for the first heat of the day.
Daniel Verdolaga launched next for the butterfly leg of the race, putting up a 20.63 and setting off Ben Vorthmann for the final leg of the relay. Vorthmann clocked a 19.11 in the freestyle leg to complete Army's 1:23.36 showing in the first event of the weekend.
The Black Knights' time earned them fourth place in the first heat and finish 15th overall, earning Army Second Team All-American honors for the first time in program history. Their finish earned Army's first points at the national meet since 1987 when John Van Sant earned two top-five finishes for the Black Knights.
Army's last relay team to earn All-American honors was the quartet of O'Hara, Landgraf, Pratt, and Trainor in the 400 medley relay in 1966 when the quartet finished 11th overall with a time of 3:37.70
