A Historic Rivalry
The Army-Navy swimming & diving rivalry carries decades of history, marked by fierce competition and unforgettable moments on the boards and in the water. The men's series against the Navy traces its roots back to March 4, 1939, when the Black Knights traveled to Annapolis, Md., and secured a 48-27 victory over the Midshipmen in their inaugural meeting. Navy holds the all-time series advantage with a 57-31 record, including a 24-18 edge in meets held at the West Point.
Â
The women's series commenced on Feb. 20, 1982, in Annapolis at the United States Naval Academy. While Navy has controlled the historical narrative with a 40-5 record and a 17-4 advantage at West Point, the Army women have proven to be a formidable force in recent years.
Â
Defending Home Waters
Despite Navy's historical advantage, the Black Knights have established a commanding presence in their home waters during recent editions of the Army-Navy rivalry.
Â
The Army men are looking to replicate their recent dominance at Crandall Pool, having captured a decisive 192.5-107.5 victory over Navy during their last home matchup on Dec. 5, 2024. That triumph followed another commanding home win for the Black Knights on Dec. 2, 2022, when they defeated the Midshipmen 189-111.
Â
To secure the star, Army will lean on a roster featuring several program record holders. Junior, Johnny Crush enters the rivalry meet holding the academy and Crandall Pool records in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.41 (2026), the 100-yard freestyle at 42.33 (2025), and the 200-yard backstroke at 1:40.28 (2024). He also holds the academy record in the 100-yard backstroke with a 43.84 finish (2026). Additionally, Crush has already earned two consecutive Patriot League Swimmer of the Week awards this season.Â
Â
Crush will be joined by breaststroke specialist Kohen Rankin, who holds the program and pool records in the 100-yard breaststroke at 50.76 (2026) and the 200-yard breaststroke at 1:52.85 (2026).
Â
In the butterfly events, Daniel Verdolaga leads the way with an academy-record time of 46.27 in the 100-yard butterfly (2024).
Â
Freshman backstroke and butterfly specialist, Paul Moody, has made an immediate impact on the program, swimming a 1:46.09 in the 200-yard backstroke to move into Army's all-time top 10 list. Moody also has a Patriot League Men's Rookie of the Week honor to his name. Freshman, Jason Sugihara, is also a rookie to watch, as he received the Patriot League Men's Rookie of the Week honor on Sept. 29 for his performance at the Thursday Night Showdown where he went undefeated across the four events he appeared in in his collegiate debut. Sugihara dominated, sweeping his individual schedule, placing first in the 150-yard freestyle with a time of 1:12.38 before winning the 200-yard reverse IM in 1:56.37, as well as contributing to two relay victories and generating 40 individual points for the Black Knights.
Â
In the diving well, freshman Brooks Head has delivered strong early performances, posting scores of 293.90 on 1-meter and 264.45 on 3-meter at the Rutgers Invite.
Â
Women Seek Continued Home Success
The Army women will look to feed off the energy of the home crowd to capture the star. Last season the Army women's swim and dive team experienced success, going 9-1 overall, with a 6-0 mark at Crandall.
Â
The Black Knights last hosted the Midshipmen on Dec. 5, 2024, securing a thrilling 169-131 victory to give them their first win over Navy since Dec. 1, 1988.
Â
This season, the Black Knights feature a strong, record-breaking group featuring swimmers such as Angie McKane, who anchors the sprint and butterfly events. McKane currently holds the academy records in the 100-yard freestyle at 48.84 (2026), the 100-yard backstroke at 52.53 (2026), and the 100-yard butterfly at 51.34 (2026). Her mark in the 100-yard butterfly also stands as the Crandall Pool record. The junior also received a Patriot League Women's Swimmer of the Week honor on Sept. 29.
Â
In the diving well, sophomore Hadley Futch holds the academy record on the 1-meter board with a score of 302.03 (2026), and she recently qualified for 2027 NCAA Diving Zones scoring a 286.90 on the 1-meter and 265.55 on the 3-meter at the Rutgers Invite. She was honored as the Patriot League Women's Diver of the Week on Oct. 13 for her performance.
Â
Freshman Hannah Wooten has bolstered Army in distance freestyle events. Wooten recently claimed victories in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.66) and 1000-yard freestyle (10:10.50) at the Rutgers Invite, securing a spot on Army's all-time top 10 list in the 1000-yard freestyle. She also has received two consecutive Patriot League Women's Rookie of the Week honors.
