Women’s Tennis Defeats Lehigh to Secure Spot in Championship Match
April 26, 2025 | Women's Tennis
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Rain may have forced a last-minute location change to indoor counts at Syracuse's Drumlins Country Club, but it couldn't dampen an Army West Point Women's Tennis semifinal win over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks Saturday, as the Black Knights clinched a spot in the Patriot League Championship Match with a 4-0 win.
It was the second 4-0 win in as many days for Army, who advanced to the final without a blemish in the postseason to date. The Black Knights previously defeated Lafayette in Friday's quarterfinal match.
Once again, a doubles point win set up a decisive victory in singles. After Jenna Sabile and Julia Kelly clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court No. 2, the Black Knights had little issue in their three singles wins, with Vennmukiil Mathivanan winning by double bagel on court No. 4 for the second time in as many days, and the third 6-0, 6-0 match win in singles play for Army this postseason.
Elsewhere in singles, Emma Sy dropped just three total games on court No. 5, and Sabile cruised to a straight sets win of her own on court No. 2.
The Black Knights secure their first spot in a Patriot League Championship match since 2023, when they took a loss to Boston University in the final. Army last won the conference title in 2022, defeating the Terriers in that championship match.
Army and BU have combined to win 18 of the past 19 league tournament championships, with the Black Knights winning nine titles in a row from 2005-13, and also claiming championships in 2018, 2019 and 2022. Army's 17 total Patriot League championships—all but one coming under current head coach Paul Peck—leads the league.
