From the Desk of AD #31
April 03, 2025 | General
Â
I am writing to you from Kings Point, NY at the 64th Annual Conference of Service Academy Superintendents (COSAS). COSAS is an opportunity for in-person and virtual meetings with our military academy counterparts as we all strive to produce our nation's finest leaders.Â
As a reminder, the Desk of AD #31 newsletter is a new communication designed to keep you informed and engaged with Army West Point Athletics and the Army West Point Athletic Association (AWPAA). As your Director of Athletics, I am excited to use this space to share key updates on our department, highlight the achievements of our cadet-athletes, engage with topics relating to the fan experience, and provide insight into the ever-evolving landscape of college athletics.

Michie Stadium Preservation Project Update
The project kicked off last Spring with the demolition of the East Stands and after nearly a year of work that was predominantly below ground, it is exciting to see the new East Stands rising out of the ground. While work on the foundations and underground utilities is finishing up in the South end of the construction site, the first pieces of structural steel were installed at the North end this past week. With one 250ft tall crane on-site installing steel and another crane arriving next week, the progress of vertical construction will pick up in the coming weeks and be nearly 50% complete by Graduation keeping the project on schedule to be open in time for the Fall 2026 football season. To learn more about this transformative project, visit https://www.michiestadium.com.

For the first time in 39 seasons, our men's swimming & diving team sent multiple athletes to compete at the NCAA Championships in Seattle, Washington. The 200 medley relay team finished fourth in their heat and 15th overall to earn the first All-American honors in the event in program history. Johnny Crush, Kohen Rankin, Daniel Verdolaga, and Ben Vorthmann combined for a 1:23.36 in the event to set a new program and Patriot League record in the first heat of the national meet.Â
Freshman Johnny Crush earned Army's first First Team All-American honors since 1987 with an eighth-place finish in the 100 backstroke.Â

Both basketball teams' seasons came to an end recently after appearing in the postseason.Â
The men's program appeared in the CBI was the Black Knights' first postseason appearance under second-year head coach Kevin Kuwik. Then, in the opening round of play, the Black Knights got their biggest win of the year, defeating the Elon University Phoenix, 83-78. The win in the opening round of the CBI broke the program's 55-year postseason tournament win drought.
