Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes No. 25 Women's Lacrosse Past American

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Army West Point women's lacrosse (9-2, 4-1 Patriot League) secured a 16-13 victory over American (5-8, 1-5 Patriot League) on Saturday afternoon from the nation's capital.
Army outscored the Eagles 5-1 in the fourth quarter after entering the final frame with a one-goal deficit.
Army's draw control was the difference, winning 24 of 33 for the game and 11 of 13 in the second half as Brigid Duffy logged nine while Sarah Chernik picked up seven.
The Black Knights were led by Allison Reilly and Brigid Duffy who each scored six goals while Ryan Remaly added a hat trick. Gabrielle Mirak also got on the scoresheet with a tally in the first quarter.
Reilly added two assists which bring her into a tie for the program record with 86 career assists.
Lindsey Serafine earned her ninth win of the season in the cage for Army with six saves.
Reilly continued her prowess in the first quarter, scoring the first two of the game for the Black Knights.
American and Army traded goals to start as a tally from Gabrielle Mirak made it 3-3 with 5:09 remaining before a woman-up goal for the Eagles gave them a 4-3 lead with 3:07 to go.
Duffy notched her first of the game in the closing seconds to deadlock the score at four goals apiece through the opening frame.
Army took the lead to begin the second as Reilly fed Ryan Remaly for Army's fifth goal. American answered as neither team was able to build a multi-goal lead until the 9:20 mark of the second quarter.
This was achieved as Duffy converted an eight-meter which was followed up by an unassisted tally from Reilly which secured her hat trick. It was an eventually 3-0 run for the Black Knights as Duffy scored her third of the game shortly after to put Army ahead 8-5.
The Eagles answered the next four goals, tying the game at eight with 3:06 remaining in the half with an eight-meter goal before taking a 9-8 lead with 2:22 left in the half.
Duffy then fought three a tough double team before scoring her fourth of the first half, which made the score 9-9 as the team's headed into halftime. Army outshot the Eagles 26-12 in the opening half hour while winning 13 of 20 draw controls.
The Eagles continued to maintain possession in the second half and got out to an 11-9 lead with the first two scores of the half. Army was shut down through the first half of the frame before Duffy and Reilly had consecutive scores to the game back up at 11 at the 5:13 mark.
American took a 12-11 lead into the fourth quarter following Reagan Murdoch's third goal of the game for the Eagles.
Reilly wasted no time as Army won the opening draw control to begin the fourth and Reilly scored her fifth goal of the game to give each team a dozen goals.
Reilly then fed Remaly for the go-ahead goal before scoring her sixth of the game which brought the score to a 14-12 Army lead with 10:50 to go in the game.
Army ran the clock down with stops on defense and holding possession on offense, with Duffy then making a 4-0 run to begin the quarter as she collected another goal from the eight-meter.
American made it a 15-13 game with the next goal, before Remaly sealed the contest with her third goal of the game with 2:12 remaining. Army's draw control was dominant down the stretch, winning six of seven down the stretch in the fourth quarter.
Army will return to take on archrival Navy in the Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA, with opening draw set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12th from Michie Stadium.
