Scot Sloan Returns to Football Coaching Staff
January 07, 2026 | Football
West Point, N.Y. — Army West Point Football Head Coach Jeff Monken has announced that Scot Sloan will return to the coaching staff to coach the safeties.
Sloan returns to the Academy following the 2025 season at Samford University, where he served as defensive coordinator and was named interim head coach for the final two games of the season.
This marks Sloan's second stint at West Point. He previously served as Co-Defensive Coordinator and Safeties coach in 2022. During that season, he helped lead a Black Knights defense that ranked third nationally in passing yards allowed and mentored Marquel Broughton to a career-high 88 tackles and first-team All-Independent honors.
"We're thrilled to welcome Scot back to our coaching staff," said Monken. "He knows what it means to coach at West Point, he understands our culture, and he's someone our players will respect and respond to. Scot brings experience, energy, and a strong commitment to developing cadet-athletes the right way, and we're excited to have him back as part of our program."
Prior to his time at Samford, Sloan spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons as the defensive coordinator at Appalachian State, where his leadership sparked a significant late-season defensive surge in 2023. That turnaround helped propel the Mountaineers to a Sun Belt East Division championship and a Cure Bowl victory, highlighted by an elite scoring defense that allowed just 15.3 points per game over the final four regular-season contests and only nine points in the Cure Bowl win over Miami (Ohio). The unit also dominated in takeaways, leading the Sun Belt with 15 interceptions and ranking among the nation's leaders with 25 total turnovers forced. Sloan's impact extended to player development as well, with Tyrek Funderburk earning All-America honors and Nate Johnson and Santana Hopper being named Freshman All-Americans under his guidance.
"Army West Point has always felt like home to me," said Sloan. "This place, this program, and the people here mean a great deal to my family and me. I'm grateful for the opportunity to return and continue working alongside Coach Monken and this staff to develop our young men on and off the field. There's a special standard here, and I'm excited to get back to work helping uphold it."
Sloan's coaching career also includes stops at Georgia Southern, Georgia Military College, Clemson, and Riverside Military Academy, where he served as head coach and athletics director. He played defensive back at Clemson (1989–91), earning three bowl appearances and contributing to the 1991 ACC championship team.
Sloan holds two degrees from Clemson University and an additional degree from Lincoln Memorial University. He and his wife, Stephanie, have two sons, Seth and Samuel, along with a granddaughter, Saylor, and a grandson, Sawyer.
