PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Kya Smith became the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 career points, and Audrey Annee drilled six 3-pointers for a career-high 21 points as Army West Point women's basketball rolled past Brown 81-56 on Thursday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Smith finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, and the Black Knights (2-0) shot 53.8 percent from 3-point range in their first road win of the year.
"Everyone is so proud of you, Kya Smith," Coach Kuester congratulated Smith in the locker room post game. "You work your tail off. You have gotten better every single year that you've been here. It's been unbelievable. It's your work ethic, and it inspires every single one of us, including myself. So do not stop. We've got a long ways to go."
How It Happened
Brown grabbed an early 6-5 lead, but Army answered with a 13-0 run. Camryn Tade hit two of her three 3-pointers in the stretch, and Smith scored five points as the Black Knights went up 18-6. Annee checked in late in the first quarter and immediately caught fire, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers and adding a fastbreak layup to push the lead to 26-12. Army shot 52.6 percent and made five 3-pointers in the period.
The Bears won the second quarter 15-11 to trim the deficit, but Annee buried another 3 and Smith scored on a layup with 27 seconds left. Army took a 37-29 lead into halftime.
The Black Knights broke it open in the third quarter, going 6-of-7 from 3-point range. Fiona Hastick scored five straight points and Taylor Wilson hit a 3 in an 8-0 run that made it 45-30. After a Brown basket, Army ripped off 13 straight points: Annee's back-to-back 3s in transition, a 3 from Tade, and two layups from Smith. Annee capped her night with her sixth 3-pointer, and Army outscored Brown 25-10 in the quarter to lead 62-39.
Smith hit the milestone in the fourth quarter. Already up to 19 points, she went to the line with 3:17 left, and her first free throw was the 1,000th point of her career. She made the second too, part of a 6-for-7 night at the line. Reganne Reardon and Jane Preston added late 3-pointers, and Army led by as many as 30.
