Women’s Basketball Uses Dominant Defense to Defeat Colgate
February 04, 2026 | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – It was education day at Christl Arena, and the kids had plenty to cheer for as the Army West Point women's basketball team took down Colgate, 59-35, on Wednesday afternoon.
Army (17-5, 8-3) played ferocious defense for all 40 minutes, limiting Colgate (6-16, 2-9) to 28.9 percent shooting from the field. It was the second-best defensive performance by opponent shooting percentage this season for Army, who is now 2-0 when holding its foe to sub-30 percent shooting.
Thirty-five points is tied for the third-fewest points allowed by Army in its Division I era. The last time the Black Knights gave up 35 or fewer points against a Division I opponent was on Feb. 20, 2016, when Navy scored 34.
It was a balanced attack offensively for Army, who had just one player score in double figures – Camryn Tade – but had eight players with five or more points.
After falling on the road to Holy Cross in a highly intense game on Saturday, Army led for 39:11 on Wednesday and never trailed.
The Black Knights got off to a strong start, as Fiona Hastick and Reese Ericson hit back-to-back threes to put Army up 9-2 in the opening three minutes of action. A few minutes later, Hastick added another bucket, pushing the Army lead to 11-2, forcing Colgate to use a timeout.
Coming out of the media timeout, Army continued to find success on both ends of the court and a pair of Brooke Wilson free-throws right before the end of the quarter gave the Black Knights a 17-7 advantage after 10 minutes. The Raiders were held to just three made shots on nine attempts, while Army was 5-12 from the field and 5-6 from the line.
The second quarter proved to be Army's most dominant stretch of play on Wednesday, as it outscored Colgate 21-8 in the period. After the Raiders scored the opening bucket, Army went on an 11-0 run that was capped off by a Soleil Montrose layup to give the team a 28-9 lead going into the under-five media timeout.
Army closed out the quarter strong and took a 38-15 advantage into the halftime break. The Black Knights' 23-point halftime lead was their second-largest halftime lead the season. They led the Raiders by 27 on Jan. 3. Fifteen points are tied for the fewest allowed in a first half this season, which also came against Colgate.
At the break, Army was shooting 52.2 percent from the field, which included a 63.6 percent clip in the second quarter.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Army offense wasn't as hot shooting the ball as it was in the second quarter, but the defense remained strong. Army won the period 12-8 and held Colgate to 3-13 from the field. The Black Knights didn't shoot it much better, going 3-12.
Leading 50-23 at the start of the fourth quarter, Army did not shoot it great, but its lead never fell below 23.

Quotable – Head Coach Katie Kuester
"Really proud of our defensive effort. I think we are capable of scoring more offensively, but I think defense is what we lay our heads on at night. We know that defensively we're going to be able to compete with anyone in the nation. I was very pleased with our evenly distributed scoring. I think that really says who we are and what we're about."
