No. 12 Men’s Lacrosse Earns 11-9 Win Over No. 18 Rutgers on the Road

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 12-ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse (2-0, 0-0 Patriot League) team earned its second win of its 2026 campaign on Saturday with its 11-9 win over the No. 18-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) on the road.
Five Black Knights tallied goals against the Scarlet Knights, led by senior attackman Gunnar Fellows with four goals. Three Black Knights earned two goals in the game as Tyler Clark, Hill Plunkett, and Cal Lambert all earned braces in Piscataway.
The ranked matchup was an evenly balanced affair with 21 shots on goal for each teams, 20 successful clears for Army and 19 successful clears for Rutgers, 12 saves for Army and 10 saves for Rutgers, and 13 faceoff wins for Army with 10 wins for Rutgers.
Sean Byrne returned between the pipes for the Black Knights, earning 12 saves against the Scarlet Knights to secure his 15th career game with at least 10 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rutgers set a fast pace for the afternoon in New Jersey with two goals in the first three minutes of action as the home team jumped out to an early lead.
Army responded quickly, led by the crosse of Gunnar Fellows who quickly buried a pair of goals just over two minutes apart to bring the score tied.
Rutgers regained the lead with two and a half minutes remaining on the clock, but the Black Knights brought things tied as Hill Plunkett buried an unassisted goal with five seconds left in the first frame.
Sophomore midfielder Aiden Weisenborn scored his first goal of the 2026 campaign just under five minutes into the second frame to claim the first goal of the second quarter for Army with the assist from Tyler Mathews.
The Scarlet Knights responded assertively, tallying three goals in a three-and-a-half-minute span to surge ahead to a 6-4 lead.
Cal Lambert scored his second goal of the season just over two minutes remaining in the first half to bring the game within one, but Rutgers regained its two-goal lead with a minute and a half remaining in the quarter to carry a 7-5 lead into the second half.
Determined to take home a victory, the Black Knights turned up the heat in the second half as Fellows and Lambert each added to their goal tallies in the first three minutes to bring the game tied at 7.
After back-and-forth play haunted the Busch Practice Bubble for six minutes of action, Hill Plunkett scored his second unassisted goal of the afternoon to break the stalemate and give Army an 8-7 lead.
The Scarlet Knights responded in kind with an unassisted goal with two and a half minutes remaining on the clock to bring the two teams tied at eights and place the afternoon's decision on the fourth quarter.
Rutgers edged into the lead once more with a goal just over a minute into the return to play, but Army's Tyler Clark scored his first of the day to tie the game at nines led than a minute later.
The two teams continued to battle for control of the game and the Black Knights cracked the code shortly after the midpoint of the quarter as Tyler Clark put in an effort-filled shot from mid-air to score his second goal of the day.
Army fed off the momentum of Clark's goal and Gunnar Fellows netted his fourth goal of the day just 47 seconds after Clark to put Army ahead 11-9 with six and a half minutes left on the clock.
The Scarlet Knights pressed Army's defense as the fourth quarter clock ticked down , but caused turnovers from Tommy Stines and Keagan Treacy as well as a key save from Sean Byrne maintained Army's two-goal lead through the final whistle to secure their second win of the season.
