Women’s Rugby Opens 7s Season at Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Army West Point women's rugby team opened its 7s season with a number of matches on Saturday at Brown.
The Black Knights squad was split into two teams, Gold and Black. Each squad played in four matches, with Army Black finishing in second place and Army Gold in third.
Army Black
Army opened the day with a 22-5 win over Northeastern. Grace Macune scored the first try of the game, and following an Alyssa Eisenhart conversion, the Black Knights quickly led 7-0. Army continued to extend its lead thanks to try's from Taimane Fiatoa and another from Macune to make it 17-0. The Black Knights final score of the match came from Ellie Kearney.
In the Black team's second contest of the day, they defeated Brown's second team 33-0. In the match, Army got started with a try from Yesenia Morales and did not look back. The win marked the first shutout of the day.
Army followed with another shutout, this time defeating AIC 21-0. The Black Knights got scores from Fiatoa and two from Morales, with Eisenhart converting on each conversion.
In the championship game of the round robin format, Army fell to the top Brown team 29-17.
Army Gold
The Gold team recorded a 37-0 win over Coast Guard to open its competition. Molly Kennedy opened the scoring, with a plethora of other players adding tries to give Army a 20-0 lead at half. Coming out of the break, Army closed out the game with tries from Zoe Weimer, Marissa Wollbrinck and Gwen Gilchrist.
The second match of the day saw Army defeat St. Bonaventure 36-0. Bekah Shepkosky opened the scoring. Also adding tries in the victory were Kennedy, Leila Galarza (2x) and Addison Bowman.
Against Brown's top squad, Army Gold fell 43-0.
The Black Knights closed their Saturday out with a 17-5 win over AIC in the 3rd place match. Bowman, Elene Andrade and Kennedy gave the Gold team a 17-0 lead at half. Army surrendered just five points in the second half to close out the day with a win.
