Track and Field Earns Three Weekly Honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After impressive showings at the famous Penn Relays, Charlotte Richman, Collin Torres and Todd Worth earned Patriot League weekly honors, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Richman was named the Patriot League Women's Track Athlete of the Week after posting a remarkably fast time of 15:34.07 the 5000m, which was good for third place. The time set a new program record and a service academy record. This marks her second time this outdoor season winning a weekly conference honor.
"Charlotte has been running at a high level all year and what she did at the Penn Relays was possibly the best example yet of just how good she is," said Director of Track and Field Mike Smith. "Although she is in her final season of eligibility she is in the infancy of her athletic career. She came to us as a basketball player and part time runner. When basketball didn't work out for her she turned all of her energy into cross country and track and it has been our privilege to watch her ascension to the top levels of the NCAA. We are lucky to have her."
Torres was named the Field Athlete of the Week on the men's side after he took home first place in the men's javelin championship with a mark of 67.77m. That distance is sixth all-time at Army and was 1.17m clear of second place. With the win, Army has won an individual event at the Penn Relays for the second year in a row. Last season, Emily Fink won the women's hammer championship.
"Collin is one of the most resilient, competitive, consistent and dedicated athletes I've ever worked with," said Assistant Coach (Throws) Brian Woodbury. "Coming off a surgery in the fall, we missed him indoors in the weight throw and we all assumed we lost him for the year through outdoor in javelin. Fortunately, he accepted the challenge and came back better than ever. He was medically cleared the morning of our home outdoor opener and threw 58.90m, beat Navy and won the Star Meet a few weeks later with a new personal best of 65.13m, and then won the Penn Relays Championship two weeks later with a personal best of 67.77m. He has put together one of the best seasons I've ever been apart of against all odds. I couldn't be more proud of him. Collin has further cemented himself as a cornerstone of the Army Throws program for years to come."
For the second time this season Worth has earned Rookie of the Week after an impressive effort in the 4x800m relay. Army posted a 7:23.67, which was the fastest time an Army team has posted since 1985. Worth ran his split – the second leg – in 1:48.60.
"Todd has quietly put together a very competitive season of 800 meter racing. He is a talented young athlete and he is not afraid of high level competition," said Smith. He ran the second leg on our relay this weekend in one of the biggest races of his young career and he had the fastest split on our team. He is on the verge of some big breakthroughs as we continue to point him toward the championship season."
The Black Knights are back in action this Friday and Saturday at the Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton.
