Softball Scores Comeback Victory Over No. 2 Seeded Colgate to Open Patriot League Tournament
May 07, 2026 | Softball
BOSTON — Army West Point softball (33-23) opened its 2026 Patriot League Tournament appearance on Thursday, battling back from an early deficit while using timely hitting, strong relief pitching plus a late insurance run to defeat the Colgate University Raiders (27-25) 6-3.
With the win, the Black Knights extend their overall win streak to five straight games and advance to the winner's bracket of the double-elimination style Patriot League Tournament.
Sophomore first basemen and All-League First Team member Hannah Laub led the offense in her postseason debut, finishing the day with a team-high three hits and two runs, plus added an RBI on a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Taylor Brown and Tayten Moore also played key roles for the Black Knights, adding two hits and an RBI each. Ashton White added a hit and an RBI and Mia Bonsignore also added a hit.
On the pitch side, Katelyn Flanders received the start, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing only one hit, but had three runs, none earned. Breanna Izzo entered as relief, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing one hit, zero runs, while logging four strikeouts, ultimately being named the pitcher of record for the Black Knights.
How It Happened
Army threatened in the opening inning after Tayten Moore reached and Ashton White singled, but Colgate escaped the jam.
In the bottom half, defensive miscues proved costly as Colgate capitalized on an error and a three-run home run to take an early 3–0 lead against Army starter Katelyn Flanders.
Flanders settled in after the opening frame and began to find rhythm in the circle. She worked through the second inning cleanly and continued to keep Colgate from extending the lead while Army's offense searched for momentum.
The Black Knights finally broke through in the fourth inning.
Hannah Laub opened the frame with a single before Mia Bonsignore ripped a double down the right-field line to put two runners in scoring position.
Breanna Coonfare drove in Army's first run on a fielder's choice, and moments later Moore came through with a clutch RBI single that also benefited from a throwing error, allowing two more runs to score as Army erased the deficit and tied the game at 3–3.
Flanders exited in the third after working through traffic, and Breanna Izzo entered in relief with the bases loaded and one out.
Izzo immediately delivered a huge strikeout to end the threat and strand all three runners, shifting momentum back toward Army. From there, Izzo was dominant, keeping Colgate scoreless over the remainder of the game while working around occasional traffic with poise.
Army took the lead for good in the sixth inning.
After Samantha Sims reached and Moore singled, Taylor Brown lined an RBI single through the left side to score the go-ahead run, putting Army in front 4–3. Later in the inning, White added a sacrifice fly to bring home another run and extend the lead to 5–3.
The Black Knights added insurance in the seventh when Laub launched a solo home run to left field, giving Army a 6–3 advantage.
Izzo slammed the door in the bottom of the seventh, stranding two runners after a late Colgate push and recording a key strikeout to end the game.
On Deck
The Black Knights continue their appearance in the Patriot League Tournament, taking on the tournament host and 2026 regular-season champion, the Boston University Terriers.
A rematch of the 2025 Patriot League Championship, when the two teams faced off earlier this season, the Terriers earned a 2-1 series win over the Black Knights at the Army Softball Complex. Last year in the Patriot League Tournament, the Black Knights were 0-2 against Boston U. The last time the two teams faced off in Boston in 2025, Army won a 2-1 regular-season series against the Terriers.
The tournament will continue on Friday, May 8, with the game starting at 11 a.m. ET. The winner of the game will advance to Championship Saturday, and the loser will take on the winner of game four between No. 4 seed Lafayette and No. 2 seed Colgate at 3 p.m. ET.
For fans who cannot make the trip to Boston, all games of the Patriot League Tournament will stream live on ESPN+
