Women’s Rugby Secures First Win of Season Against Sacred Heart

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point women's rugby secured their first victory of the season in a 24-17 victory over the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. In the victory, sophomore Gabby Woenker recorded two tries, while junior Emily Steen earned two conversions.
The Black Knights got on the board early just three minutes into the match off a try from Woenker to make it 5-0, and seconds later Steen recorded her first conversion of the day to make it a 7-0 lead for Army. Nearly nine minutes later, Sacred Heart got on the board with a try of their own to make it 7-5 but were unable to convert the conversion.
At 19:20, Woenker earned her second try of the match to extend the Black Knight led to 12-5. About halfway thru the first half, the Black Knights extended their lead to 17-5 off a try from Molly Kennedy, which the Black Knights took into the half time break.
Coming out of halftime, the Pioneers struck early with a try just five minutes into the final frame to cut into the Black Knight lead 17-10.
Sophomore Chloe de Leon secured a try at 60:52 to extend the Black Knight led to 22-10 and two minutes later, Steen added another conversion to extend the Black Knight led to 14. Sacred Heart earned a try and conversion of their own, but their efforts would prove to be futile cutting into the Black Knights lead to make it 24-17.
